Democracy: deciding yourself or being represented

In a democracy the people decide. Sometimes everyone votes themselves, usually we elect representatives. The majority decides, but fundamental rights protect the minority too.

First grade of secondaryAges 12 to 14Draft: Not yet reviewed by a citizenship teacher.

Why

Your class may choose where the trip goes. Do you let everyone vote, or do you choose two pupils who arrange it?

Every group has to make decisions: a class, a sports club, a municipality, a country. Democracy is a way to do that fairly, where everyone counts.

When you know how a democracy works, you can join in better, vote and stand up for yourself and for others. You also notice sooner when things are not fair.
