Checking facts and spotting disinformation

Not everything online is true. Watch for warning signs, find out who is behind it and do not forward anything you have not checked.

First grade of secondaryAges 12 to 16Draft: Not yet reviewed by a citizenship teacher.

Why

A message in your class group says school is closed tomorrow because of a gas leak. Everyone shares it. Is it true? And how do you find out?

False messages can spread fast, precisely because they surprise, frighten or anger people. Whoever forwards them helps them along, even without meaning to.

With a few simple checks you can often find out quickly whether something is reliable. That way you protect yourself and the people you would otherwise have sent it to.
